Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
