The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
