Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such medications should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
