European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
